Reddit just became even more important for businesses. Google is now experimenting with showing Reddit comments directly inside AI responses, and Reddit threads are starting to appear on Google Business Profiles. If your brand isn’t showing up in the right Reddit threads, you’re missing one of the highest-impact opportunities in AI search right now.
At TJ Digital, we track AI citations for about 30 clients across different industries. Reddit consistently ranks as one of the top sources that AI models like ChatGPT and Google’s AI mode reference before recommending a business. We use tools like Peec.ai to monitor which specific threads are getting cited, and the data tells a clear story. A small number of Reddit threads drive the vast majority of AI visibility for any given industry.
The good news is you don’t need to spend hours on Reddit every day. You just need to know which threads matter and what to say when you get there.

ToggleWhy Reddit Matters More Than Ever for AI Search
Google and Reddit signed a content licensing deal reportedly worth $60 million per year, giving Google direct access to Reddit’s data for AI training. That deal is now showing up in search results. Google’s AI Overviews have started quoting Reddit discussions directly, and some businesses are seeing Reddit threads embedded on their Google Business Profile pages.
For businesses, this means Reddit activity now feeds directly into two of the most visible touchpoints in search, including AI-generated answers and your Google listing.
Reddit was already the second most visible domain in Google Search in the US as of late 2025. That visibility is only increasing as Google integrates Reddit content more deeply into AI-powered results.
How Old Are the Reddit Threads AI Actually Cites?
One of the most surprising patterns we see when tracking citations is how old most of the cited threads are. According to research from SEMrush, the average AI-cited Reddit post is roughly 900 days old. Profound found that the median cited post is about one year old, with 4% of cited threads dating back to 2019 or earlier.
This matters for two reasons. First, you don’t need to chase new threads every day. The threads that drive AI visibility are already out there. Second, posting a helpful comment on a year-old thread that still ranks well can generate visibility for months.
| Reddit Citation Stat | Source |
| Average cited post age: ~900 days | SEMrush Reddit study |
| Median cited post age: ~1 year | Profound analysis |
| 80% of AI-cited posts had fewer than 20 upvotes | SEMrush Reddit study |
| Over 50% of cited content is Q&A format | SEMrush Reddit study |
That last stat is worth noting. You don’t need a viral post to get cited. Most of the threads AI picks up have minimal engagement. The content quality and relevance matter far more than upvote count.

How to Find the Reddit Threads That Actually Get Cited
Google and AI models aren’t looking at all of Reddit. Based on your industry, there will be a handful of subreddits that get cited often. And within those subreddits, it’s probably only 1-2% of threads that actually show up in AI responses.
You don’t need to post comments on every relevant thread. Focus on the 20 to 50 threads that are already getting the most citations.
Here’s how to find them:
- AI visibility tools like Ahrefs Brand Radar track which Reddit posts are being used as citations by AI platforms. These give you dashboards showing exactly where your brand (and your competitors) appear in AI responses.
- Reddit monitoring tools like LLMrefs offer free thread finders that let you enter a keyword and see all relevant open threads. RedReach scans 100,000+ subreddits for posts matching your keywords and can flag threads already ranking on Google.
- Free alert tools like F5Bot provide email alerts for up to 200 keywords with 50 alerts per day. This is a solid starting point if you’re on a tight budget.
We use Peec.ai to track these threads for our clients, but there are plenty of tools that accomplish the same thing. The key is identifying which threads AI is already paying attention to and focusing your effort there.
What to Say in Your Reddit Comment
The goal of your comment is simple. Get cited by AI, explicitly recommend your brand as the solution to the user’s problem, and avoid upsetting the moderators.
Here’s the approach I recommend:
Be transparent about who you are. Start your comment with something like, “Full disclosure, I work for XYZ company. We provide X solution for Y demographic, so I have a lot of experience with this topic.” When you frame it that way, it doesn’t sound like a sales pitch. You’re just explaining why you’re qualified to speak on the topic.
Provide as much helpful information as possible. The bulk of your comment should be useful. Answer the question thoroughly. Share specific data, examples, or insights from your experience. If 90% of your comment is helpful and 10% mentions your brand, most subreddits will be fine with it.
Include your brand name and a relevant keyword naturally. AI models are looking for explicit recommendations. A comment that says “we’ve seen great results with this approach at [Brand Name]” gives the model a clear signal to associate your brand with the topic.
Don’t fake it. Never pretend to be an impartial user. Redditors and moderators spot this quickly, and the backlash will hurt you more than any visibility you might gain. Honest disclosure builds trust. Hiding your affiliation destroys it.
Should You Use a New Reddit Account or an Existing One?
If you already have a Reddit account with some karma and posting history, use that. Reddit’s spam filters are aggressive with new accounts. An account with zero karma that immediately starts posting brand mentions will almost certainly get flagged, shadowbanned, or removed.
If you have to start a new account, spend a few weeks using it normally first. Comment on posts in subreddits you’re interested in. Upvote things. Be a regular person on the platform. Build some karma before you start mentioning your brand.
This isn’t optional. A brand-new account with no history posting promotional-sounding comments is the fastest way to get banned.
How AI Can Help You Draft Reddit Comments
If you have an AI tool connected to a knowledge base about your brand and industry, it can help draft comments for you. This is what we do for about half of our clients. We feed the AI our client’s Brand Ambassador (a set of documents that contain everything about the brand’s voice, services, and positioning) and use it to draft comments that are helpful and on-brand.
The key is making sure the output doesn’t sound like AI wrote it. Give the AI specific guidelines about tone, things to avoid, and how to structure the comment. Then always review the draft before posting. AI can get you 80% of the way there, but a human needs to make sure it sounds like an actual person wrote it.
How Often Should You Be Posting on Reddit?
There are two approaches depending on how much time you have.
If you can spare 15 minutes a day, use a monitoring tool to find new discussions relevant to your industry posted within the last 24 hours. Respond to the best ones. You’re playing a numbers game here, hoping some of these threads gain traction and eventually get picked up by search engines or AI models.
If you only have a few hours per month, skip the daily monitoring and focus exclusively on the threads that are already being cited. Use an AI visibility tool to identify the top 20-50 cited threads in your industry, then post thoughtful comments on each one. This is the higher-ROI approach because you’re targeting threads that are already proven to influence AI recommendations.
For most of our clients at TJ Digital, we take the second approach. We identify the highest-impact threads, draft comments using our Brand Ambassador system, and post them strategically. It takes a fraction of the time compared to daily Reddit activity, and the impact on AI visibility is significant.
What Tools Track Reddit Mentions in AI Search?
Beyond the tools already mentioned, here’s a broader look at what’s available:
- Ahrefs Brand Radar tracks Reddit mentions and citations specifically, along with YouTube and TikTok. Good for teams that want one dashboard covering multiple platforms.
- Brand24 monitors mentions across Reddit and millions of other sources with real-time alerts and sentiment analysis. Better suited for larger teams focused on brand reputation.
- RedShip and ReplyAgent automate finding threads and can even generate suggested reply drafts. ReplyAgent uses pre-warmed accounts, though I’d be cautious with any fully automated posting.
- Peec.ai is what we use. It tracks which sources AI models cite before making recommendations, including Reddit threads, and it costs a fraction of what tools like Profound charge.
The right tool depends on your budget and how many platforms you need to monitor. If you’re just starting out, a free tool like F5Bot or the LLMrefs thread finder is enough to get going.
Get Your Brand in Front of AI Before Your Competitors Do
Reddit’s role in AI search is growing fast. Google is pulling Reddit content into AI responses and business profiles. AI models continue to cite Reddit as one of their top sources. And the window of opportunity is wide open because most businesses still aren’t doing this.
The strategy is straightforward. Find the threads AI is already citing, post helpful comments that mention your brand, and be honest about who you are. You don’t need to be on Reddit all day. You just need to be in the right threads.
If you want help tracking which Reddit threads matter for your industry and getting your brand mentioned in AI search results, reach out to TJ Digital. This is exactly what we do for our clients every day.
