Yes, you still need a website in 2026, and the case for having a good one is stronger than it was a year ago. AI is making websites faster and cheaper to build and maintain, so the ceiling on what a small business site can do just moved way up. The question worth asking is whether the platform you are on lets AI reach your files.
At TJ Digital we run AI search campaigns for about 42 businesses, and we build most of their websites too. Across those accounts, AI referred visitors convert at roughly 8 times the rate of traditional search visitors. Every one of those campaigns has the website at the center of it.

ToggleWhy Do People Think AI Will Replace Websites?
The argument goes like this. As AI gets smarter, you no longer have to visit a website to get the information you need. AI answers the questions for you, and increasingly it can perform actions on your behalf.
So if a human never needs to go to your website and just sends an AI instead, why do you need a website at all? Really, you would only need a database and maybe a registry of tools that AI can use. If a human ever needed to interface with that data directly, the AI could spin up an interface on the fly.
That argument makes sense to me, and maybe that’s where we’re headed long-term. The traffic data already points that way. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince shared Radar data in June 2026 showing that automated requests made up 57.5% of HTML traffic across the network, passing human traffic for the first time.
Why Websites Have at Least Five Years Left
Short-term, we’re seeing a golden era for websites. My prediction is that websites have at least a good five years left, and probably much longer than that.
Here is the thing. Just as quickly as we’re gaining the ability to replace websites, we’re gaining the ability to make websites way better, way faster, and way cheaper. Both curves are moving at once, and right now the building curve is moving faster.
The website is also still where AI gets its information about you. An agent that books an appointment or compares two vendors has to read something first, and for most businesses that something is your website.
How Much Does AI Change the Cost of Building a Website?
AI is like having a team of developers and designers working 24/7 for $200 a month. Any tool or feature you want to add is one prompt away, then a quick deployment to a staging server where you can test it before pushing it live.
Site-wide updates across thousands of pages become trivial. All that information you could never keep on your website because it would go out of date in a week is suddenly easy to maintain. If you wanted, you could have AI redesign your whole website just for Easter and then switch it back the next day.
Cheap, fast updates change what belongs on a website. Pages and features that weren’t worth the developer hours a year ago are worth building today. The constraint moves from budget to knowing what’s worth building.
What Makes a Website Platform AI-Ready?
Whatever platform your website is on, it needs to be fully integrated with AI. What matters is that AI has full access to all the files in your website. It needs to be able to make any update that a human could make.
AI access to a website usually shows up in one of three forms.
- File access. An agent can read and edit the actual templates, code, and assets.
- A documented API. An agent can read and write your content programmatically.
- An MCP server. Any compatible AI assistant can connect to your site with no custom work.
MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, and it’s the standard that lets an AI agent find out what your site can do and then do it. WordPress shipped an official MCP adapter in February 2026 that converts a site’s registered abilities into tools an agent can call.
Which Website Platforms Are Keeping Up With AI?
AI access is getting easier on most platforms every month, including WordPress and Shopify. Here’s how the main categories compare right now.
| Platform type | AI access to files and data | What to do now |
| WordPress | Full file access plus an official MCP adapter and a mature REST API | Stay put and connect an agent to a staging site |
| Shopify | Theme file editing, admin operations, and an MCP server through the AI Toolkit | Stay put, especially for e-commerce |
| Headless or custom build | Full file access by definition, depends on your team | Stay put and give your agent repo access |
| Closed proprietary builder | Usually no file access, often no documented API | Ask the vendor for their AI roadmap |
Shopify open sourced its AI Toolkit in April 2026, which lets an agent update products, edit theme files, and run store operations through the Shopify CLI. That is the direction every serious platform is moving. If you want the longer version of this comparison, I broke down the best website platform for 2027 and what to do about it right now.
When Should You Move Your Website Off Its Current Platform?
Start with three questions about your current platform.
- Do you have full access to your files?
- Are those files in a documented structure that an agent can read?
- Has the platform shipped an MCP or an API with good documentation?
If the answer to all three is no, it’s probably time to reach out to the company that runs that platform and ask them what their plan is to integrate AI. If they don’t have one, you might consider migrating your website off that platform.
Plenty of businesses have good reasons to stay on the CMS they’re currently on. That is especially true for e-commerce, where migration is expensive and risky. The question is whether your platform is moving in the right direction, and how fast.
What Should You Do With Your Website Right Now?
Here are four things to do with your website right now, in order of how much they matter.
- Confirm AI can reach your site. Check for file access, an API, or an MCP server on your current platform.
- Connect an agent to a staging environment. Give it a small task first, review the output, then expand.
- Add back the content you gave up on. Pricing, inventory, service areas, anything that used to go stale too fast to maintain.
- Structure the site for agents. Clean HTML, structured data, and organized internal links all make your site readable to the AI doing the research. Here is how to prepare for agents in more detail.
Will AI Agents Replace Small Business Websites?
AI agents will not replace small business websites in the next five years. Agents are already doing a large share of the browsing, and that share keeps growing, but they are reading websites to do it. The businesses that get hurt are the ones whose sites are invisible or unreadable to those agents.
Do you still need a website if you have social media?
Yes, you still need a website even with an active social media presence. Social profiles give you reach, and AI platforms do cite them, but your website is the one source you control completely. It’s also the only place you can publish the depth of information an AI needs to recommend you confidently.
Should you move your website off WordPress in 2026?
Most businesses should stay on WordPress in 2026. WordPress has full file access, a mature REST API, and an official MCP adapter as of early 2026, which covers everything an AI agent needs. Migrate when your platform starts blocking AI access.
What is MCP and why does it matter for your website?
MCP is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect to a system and use its capabilities without custom integration work. For a website, that means any AI agent can read your content and make changes you authorize. Platforms without an MCP or a documented API will fall behind on every new AI capability.
How much does an AI-optimized website cost?
Our websites start at $3,000 for a six page site. The bigger cost driver is the optimization strategy, and we plan that before anyone starts building.
What Happens to Websites Next?
We’re just starting to scratch the surface of what’s actually possible once AI is running your website. It’s going to make websites much more valuable and much cheaper to maintain, which is why I don’t see them going away anytime soon.
