The future of SEO is getting AI to recommend your business, because website traffic was only ever a path to the sale. AI tools send less traffic than Google today, but Adobe’s 2026 Prime Day data shows shoppers who arrive from AI are 40% more likely to buy than visitors from other channels. I’ve worked in SEO for 17 years, and every campaign we run at TJ Digital now centers on whether AI recommends our client’s brand.
AI agents are the next step. Within a year, I expect a large share of people to let an AI assistant research and choose products and services for them. Those AI assistants use search engines to decide which businesses to recommend.

ToggleHow much website traffic comes from AI?
For a lot of websites, AI tools still send a small share of total traffic. That number says very little about how much AI influences which businesses customers buy from.
I keep seeing posts on LinkedIn that say something like “Only 1% of website traffic comes from AI.” The implication is that AI isn’t as important as people say, that people aren’t using it much to find businesses, or that traditional Google search is here to stay. That framing assumes website traffic was the goal.
A Pew Research Center study tracked how 900 US adults used Google. People clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% of visits with no AI summary. Only 1% of visits with an AI summary ended with a click on a link inside that summary.
AI answers shape buying decisions before anyone reaches your website. A buyer can read an AI answer, see your brand recommended, and buy from you without your analytics ever crediting AI for the sale.

What is the real goal of SEO?
The real goal of SEO is sales. Website traffic is historically how businesses got the sale or the ad click, and for most of my career, more traffic usually meant more sales.
All revenue comes from the sale. Traffic was the path that happened to work best for a long time, so the SEO industry treated traffic as the scoreboard.
If you want to be well positioned for what’s coming, plan around one question. Where will your sales come from over the next 12 months?
How should you plan your SEO strategy for 2027?
Plan your 2027 SEO strategy around where search is heading. Most SEO reporting looks backward, takes what traffic did last year, and projects it forward. Do you want to prepare for 12 months ago or for the next 12 months?
Adobe’s Prime Day data shows why the trajectory matters. During Prime Day 2025, shoppers coming from AI tools were 23% less likely to buy than shoppers from other channels. During Prime Day 2026, AI shoppers were 40% more likely to buy than visitors from paid search, email, and social media.
AI traffic to US retail sites also grew 235% year over year from January to May 2026. Anyone who planned around 2025’s numbers would have written AI shoppers off as low-value customers, and that call would have been wrong within a year.
I run an SEO agency, so I understand why other SEOs don’t want things to change. We have to embrace the disruption anyway. Do you really think that 12 months from now, the main way people choose what to buy will be typing keywords into a search bar and manually looking through websites?
How will AI agents change search?
AI agents will do more of the searching, comparing, and buying for customers. An AI agent takes action on a person’s behalf, so it can research options, compare them, fill out forms, and complete a purchase.
Many of us have been waiting for the moment AI search results fully replace traditional search, and that is happening. At this point, it looks like we’re going to speed run right past AI search results and into AI agents (or AI assistants).
Meta’s Muse showed that people are more willing to adopt AI agents than we thought. Muse launched in the US on September 8, 2026, and can book travel, fill out forms, and check out on a user’s behalf. App intelligence firm Apptopia estimates Muse got 1.8 million iPhone downloads in the US and Canada in its first 12 days, compared with 1.3 million for ChatGPT over its first 12 days.
People tend to be anti-AI until AI is actually helpful for them. We’ve officially reached the point where AI agents are helpful for the average person, and they’re getting better and easier to use every couple of weeks.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai has already told us where Google is heading. In a 2026 interview, he described the future of Google Search as an “agent manager” that runs many tasks for you at once.
My read is that every time someone searches Google for a business like yours, Google will spin up an AI agent for them. I also think Muse is putting extra pressure on Google to get there faster. I broke down what that means for your website in my post on Google AI agent SEO.
How do you optimize your website for AI agents?
Optimizing for AI agents looks a lot like traditional SEO, because AI agents use search engines to find the information they need. The difference is the reader. You’re now trying to rank for an AI, and AI uses search engines very differently than humans do.
Understanding those differences is your opportunity. Here are the biggest ones:
- AI runs several searches for one request. Google calls this query fan-out. A single question about a service can trigger hidden searches about pricing, reviews, alternatives, and fit.
- AI reads more sources than a person would. A person might click one or two results. An AI agent can pull from many pages before it recommends a business.
- People ask AI longer, more specific questions. Pew found 53% of Google searches with 10 or more words triggered an AI summary, compared with 8% of searches with one or two words.
- AI looks for proof. Case studies, specific numbers, reviews, and mentions on other websites give AI something concrete to back up a recommendation.
- AI treats citing a source and recommending a brand as separate decisions. A 2026 Semrush study found that in 61.7% of cases where AI cited a website, the answer never named that website’s brand.
The gap between being cited and being recommended matters most for businesses, because sales go to the brand AI tells the customer to choose. I covered the specific tactics in my guide on how to get recommended by AI.
A year from now, I think everyone will wake up and realize website traffic was never the goal. All that will matter is whether AI recommends your brand, your product, or your service, and 100% of your focus should be on that right now.
What SEO metrics should you track now?
Track sales and leads first, then use AI and traffic metrics to explain why those numbers moved. Here’s how I’d rank the measures that matter now:
| Measure | What it tells you | Where it falls short |
| Sales and leads | Whether your marketing is making money | Doesn’t show which channel influenced the buyer |
| AI recommendations | Whether ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode name your brand for buying-stage prompts | AI answers vary, so you need repeated tests across platforms |
| AI referral traffic | How many people click through from AI tools and how often they buy | Misses buyers who saw your brand in AI and came back later |
| AI citations | Whether AI uses your pages as a source | A citation doesn’t mean the AI recommended you |
| Organic website traffic | Whether your pages get found in traditional search | Can drop even while AI recommends your brand more often |
ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to the links it sends, so ChatGPT referral traffic shows up in Google Analytics. Google Search Console also added reports for impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode in 2026.
What else do people ask about the future of SEO?
Is SEO dead because of AI agents?
No. AI agents use search engines to find information, so SEO fundamentals still decide which businesses those agents find and recommend.
Does AI referral traffic lead to more sales?
Yes. In Adobe’s 2026 Prime Day data, shoppers arriving from AI tools were 40% more likely to buy than visitors from other channels, even though AI still sends a small share of total traffic.
How do I know if AI recommends my business?
Run the prompts your customers would use, like “best [service] for [situation],” through ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Mode, and repeat them over time. At TJ Digital, we track AI search visibility with a set of buying-stage prompts for every campaign.
Will Google rankings still matter when AI agents do the searching?
Yes. AI agents rely on search engines like Google to find information, so strong Google rankings make it more likely an agent finds and recommends your business.
How can TJ Digital help your business show up in AI?
Our AI SEO campaigns focus on getting AI to recommend your business and turning those recommendations into leads. Every campaign includes AI search visibility tracking, recommendation building, and a quarterly plan I build myself.
