When ChatGPT launched, I immediately saw where things were heading. It was clear that AI could do a lot of the work a human marketer could do. My initial conclusion: do the same work faster, drop prices, take on more volume.
There are agencies doing exactly that right now. Some are having short-term success with it.
But pretty soon, those agencies are going to get replaced by software. The value of commodity marketing work is going to keep dropping. When a small business can pay a few hundred dollars a month for software that does what an average agency does, why would they pay an agency $2,000?
The thing I didn’t see coming, and it’s really taking shape in 2026, is that AI isn’t just automating the old standard. It’s creating a new one.
What “AI Raises the Quality Bar” Actually Means
A lot of people will read that headline and roll their eyes. Fair. AI produces a staggering amount of low-quality output. The web is full of it.
But that’s a workflow problem, not an AI problem.
When you build the right structure around it, give it the right context and instructions, and keep humans responsible for the decisions that require real judgment, AI doesn’t just speed things up. It makes the work better.
The websites we’re building now are better. Technical audits are more thorough. Strategy is more comprehensive. Content quality is ahead of where we were with human writers alone.
McKinsey’s 2024 global survey found that 65% of organizations were regularly using generative AI, and the pattern is consistent: teams that treat AI as an accelerator within a well-designed process outperform teams that treat it as a replacement for process. That’s exactly what we’re seeing.

AI layer: Drafts, summarizes research, proposes structures, generates variants, and flags edge cases. Speed and breadth.
Verification layer: Fact-checking, link validation, accessibility checks, and performance audits. What gets measured gets enforced.
Human oversight layer: Strategy direction, claim validation, tradeoff resolution, and final approval. This isn’t optional. It’s the part that makes the output trustworthy.
Skip the human oversight layer, and you get confident-sounding output that’s wrong in ways that matter. NIST’s Generative AI risk profile specifically names “automation bias,” where excessive deference to AI weakens the institutional checks that catch errors. That’s how agencies ship bad audits and strategies that no one questions because the AI formatted them so neatly.

The same logic holds for web development. AI-built websites can outperform traditionally coded sites in deployment speed, iteration rate, and baseline technical hygiene. They can also underperform badly when the “AI-built” label becomes a substitute for quality management.

Not because AI automatically makes work better. Most AI-produced work is still low quality. It’s because agencies and internal teams that are building proper AI systems are raising the floor for what clients can reasonably expect. A year from now, people won’t want to pay for what was acceptable two years ago.
The gap isn’t between “using AI” and “not using AI.” It’s between intelligently designed AI workflows and everything else. That includes both AI-only automation with no human oversight and human-only production that’s too slow and too expensive to keep up.
