SEO for AI Agents: What Your Business Should Do in 2026

AI agent interacting with a business website and connected data tools for SEO

SEO for AI agents means making your business easy for an AI agent to find, trust, recommend, and use. More searches for your business are going to be carried out by an agent on behalf of a human, and the businesses those agents recommend will win the customer. In our audits at TJ Digital, we run about 50 prompts through the major AI models to see which websites they read before recommending a business.

In practice, preparing for AI agents comes down to three moves. Get agents to recommend you, make your website easy for agents to use, and keep your data on infrastructure you control so you can work with any AI model. I’ve been doing SEO and digital marketing for 17 years, and below is how I’d prepare any business for agent-driven search.

Why is every AI platform launching its own agent?

The AI agent wars have officially begun. Every major platform wants you running your agent on their system, and the launch everyone is talking about right now is Meta’s Muse.

Meta describes Muse as a personal agent with its own browser. It can use your connected services on your behalf and remember context from earlier conversations.

Google is already responding. Google just announced that you can spin up an agent directly inside Google Search with a feature called monitoring, which was previously only available to paid Gemini subscribers. To me, that looks like a step toward competing with Meta.

The platforms know that setting up an agent has always been a pain. You have to give it access to a lot of data and instructions, and structuring and maintaining all of that is hard work.

They also know how valuable an agent becomes once it’s set up. So each platform now offers an easy setup, as long as you agree to keep that agent on their platform.

If you run a business or use AI for work (which you should be by now), you’re probably already using agents, even if it’s just inside Claude or ChatGPT.

I do almost all of my work through Claude now, and I rarely even open Gmail or Notion. Once you start working this way, it’s clear that it’s the future. I think it’s only a matter of time before most people realize the same is true for their personal lives.

Should you use Claude or Muse as your AI agent?

If you’re just getting started with agents, or you mostly want help with your personal life, pick one of the big platforms and use it. I’d recommend Claude for work and Muse for personal use. Here’s how the two compare:

ClaudeMuse
Best forWork, research, writing, coding, and company knowledgePersonal errands, planning, shopping, and reminders
Where it runsClaude apps, desktop, and connected work toolsThe Muse app and WhatsApp
Business controlsTeam and Enterprise plans with admin, spend controls, and a Compliance APIMuse for Small Business requires approval before it publishes, sends, or spends
Main tradeoffBuilt for knowledge work more than everyday personal tasksNewer to business use and tied closely to Meta’s apps

Anthropic positions its current Opus 5.5 model for complex professional work and long-running agents. Claude is what I use for anything involving documents, research, or company data.

Meta launched Muse for Small Business on September 29, with connections to tools like Shopify, QuickBooks, Stripe, Slack, and Notion. If you run a small shop on those tools, Muse is worth testing for operational tasks too.

Why should businesses avoid getting locked into one AI platform?

Long term, I’d caution any business against getting locked into one of these platforms. Host your own data and your own instructions, and then connect them to whatever AI model you want. I walk through how to set that up in my post on AI vendor lock-in.

The market is moving too fast to bet on one winner. According to Similarweb’s AI traffic data, ChatGPT’s share of generative AI website visits fell from about 76% in June 2025 to about 53% in May 2026. Over the same stretch, Gemini grew from under 9% to roughly 27%, and Claude grew from about 2% to nearly 9%.

If your instructions and company knowledge only live inside one company’s agent, switching gets expensive every time the market shifts. These are the pieces worth keeping under your own control:

  • Company knowledge. Your services, pricing, policies, FAQs, and product details should live in files and systems you own.
  • Agent instructions. The prompts, processes, and rules your agents follow should be portable to any model.
  • Customer and product data. Customer records, catalogs, and availability belong in your own systems, with agents connecting to them as needed.
  • Your website and domain. Your site is the public source of truth every agent reads, so keep it accurate and complete.

How will AI agents change the way customers find your business?

It’s now very easy for anyone to start using an AI agent. Over the next few months, I expect agents to get even easier to use and much more capable.

Start getting used to the idea that most online searches for your business will come from an AI agent working on behalf of a human. Most visits and interactions with your website will come from agents too. That’s why most of our strategy at TJ Digital is now built around how agents search for businesses.

People will still use traditional search engines, and more and more, an agent will carry out that search for them. If you convince the agent to recommend you, you’ve convinced the human.

Click behavior already reflects this shift. Pew Research Center found that Google users clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when no summary appeared.

The traffic that still reaches your site is worth more. Adobe’s August 2026 AI traffic report found that AI-referred retail visitors converted 60% more often and generated 53% more revenue per visit than other traffic in July 2026. In Adobe’s consumer survey, 66% of respondents said they visit a brand’s website to verify an AI recommendation.

How do you get AI agents to recommend your business?

Agents recommend the businesses they can understand and verify. Google has said its AI features rely on the same core ranking systems as regular search, so strong SEO is still the foundation. These are the things that move the needle for getting recommended:

  • Spell out the facts an agent needs. Your services, who you serve, pricing, locations, and limitations should be stated plainly on crawlable pages. An agent can’t recommend you for something your site never says.
  • Answer the questions agents research. Google’s AI Mode can run many related searches for one request, a process Google calls query fan-out. Pages that cover pricing, comparisons, integrations, and fit give an agent more chances to find you.
  • Publish evidence nobody else has. Case studies, original data, and real customer results give an agent something specific to cite.
  • Let the right bots in. OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search results and is separate from GPTBot, which is used for training. You can allow the first and block the second.
  • Test what agents say about you. Run the prompts your customers would ask in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Mode. Results differ by platform, so check more than one.

How do you make your website usable for AI agents?

Humans will still visit your website, just less often. So make sure agents can easily use your website as well. I’d look at three things, and I cover the technical side in more detail in my post on how agents use your website.

What it doesWho reads itStatus in 2026
WebMCPLets your site declare actions, like checking availability or booking, as tools an agent can callBrowser agentsW3C Community Group draft, in a Chrome origin trial
llms.txtGives agents a short, curated map of your most useful pagesAI agents gathering informationCommunity proposal, not used by Google Search
AGENTS.mdTells AI agents how to work on your site’s codeCoding agentsUsed by more than 60,000 open-source projects

What is WebMCP?

WebMCP is a proposed web API that lets your website tell an agent exactly what it can do on a page. Without WebMCP, agents have to interpret each button and form field and click through like a human would. As of September 30, 2026, WebMCP is a W3C Community Group draft, so start with simple, read-only tools like checking stock, hours, or order status.

Do you need an llms.txt file?

An llms.txt file sits at the root of your site and gives agents a short, organized list of your most important pages. It only needs a title, a one-line description of your business, and links to your key pages.

Google has said it doesn’t use llms.txt as a ranking signal in Search, so it won’t move your Google rankings. I’d still add one, because Google isn’t the only agent reading your site.

What is an AGENTS.md file?

AGENTS.md is a README written for AI agents. It lives in your website’s code repository and tells coding agents how to build, test, and update the site safely. If developers or agents maintain your site, it keeps their work consistent.

What else do businesses ask about SEO for AI agents?

Is SEO still worth it if AI agents do the searching?

Yes. Google says its AI features run on the same core ranking systems as regular search, and overall search queries are still reaching record levels.

Do AI agents still send traffic to websites?

Yes, and those visitors are more likely to become leads and customers. In Adobe’s 2026 consumer survey, 89% of respondents said they click links or sources provided by an AI assistant.

How do you track website traffic from AI agents?

ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to its search referral links, so visits from ChatGPT show up in your analytics. Your server logs also show which AI crawlers are visiting your site and how often.

Is it safe to add WebMCP to a website?

Read-only tools, like stock checks or order lookups, carry the least risk. For anything that books, buys, or deletes, keep your normal server-side security in place and require human confirmation before the action goes through.
