The most reliable way to measure SEO success is to track clicks in Google Search Console and run daily AI prompts in ChatGPT, Google’s AI Mode, and AI Overviews. At TJ Digital, we do both for each of the more than 40 businesses we work with. After 17 years in SEO, I trust click data from Google more than any other number.
Local businesses should add Google Business Profile data to that picture, and ecommerce stores should add Google Merchant Center. Rank tracking has always been unreliable, and it has gotten even less reliable in 2026.

ToggleWhy Is Rank Tracking Unreliable?
Rank tracking is unreliable because rankings change constantly and rank trackers only watch common search terms. Most of the searches your customers actually make never show up in a rank tracker.

Why Do Google Rankings Change So Often?
Google updates its algorithm multiple times every week. Some of those changes are small and some are big, and any of them can move your pages up or down.
Rankings also change based on who is searching. The searcher’s location, their previous searches, and other personalization factors all shape what they see. Two people typing the same query can get different results.
Rankings have been especially volatile in 2026. Local SEO expert Joy Hawkins pointed out on The Edward Show, Edward Sturm’s podcast, that rankings have moved even more since Google’s May 2026 core update. I highly recommend that episode for any local business.
Why Do Rank Trackers Miss Most Searches?
Rank trackers only track common search terms, and most searches are for terms that aren’t common. A tool might follow “plumber Las Vegas” while a real customer types “plumber who can fix a slab leak in Henderson this weekend.”
AI is widening the gap between what rank trackers watch and what people search. Google now shows AI responses for a huge number of searches, so people are typing longer and more specific queries. Longer queries are even less likely to show up in anyone’s rank tracker.
What Is the Most Reliable Way to Measure SEO Results?
Google Search Console is by far the most reliable source of SEO data. It’s a free tool that shows you data directly from Google about how your site performs in organic search.
Search Console shows you:
- How many times your site appeared on a Google results page (impressions)
- How many clicks you got from those appearances
- Which search terms your site showed up for
- Which pages appeared and which pages people clicked
If your site isn’t connected yet, here’s how to set up Search Console. Once it’s running, filter out searches that include your business name, since you should rank first for those no matter what your SEO looks like.
Here’s how the main sources of SEO data compare:
| Data source | What it measures | How reliable it is | Who should use it |
| Rank trackers | Positions for a fixed list of common keywords | Low, because results shift with updates, location, and personalization | Anyone doing keyword or competitor research |
| Search Console clicks | Real visits from Google organic search | High, because it’s first-party data from Google | Every website |
| Search Console impressions | How often your pages appeared in results | Mixed, because rank trackers inflate the numbers | Every website, read with care |
| Search Console Generative AI report | Page-level impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode | Useful but limited, with no queries or clicks | Every website |
| Daily AI prompt tracking | How often AI tools recommend your brand | The best data available for AI search | Any business that wants to get recommended by AI |
| Google Business Profile performance | Calls, direction requests, and website clicks from your listing | High | Local businesses |
| Google Merchant Center | Product impressions and clicks across Google | High | Ecommerce businesses |
How Accurate Is Google Search Console Data?
Search Console data is accurate because it comes straight from Google, but three quirks change how you should read it. Rank trackers inflate impressions, uncommon queries stay hidden, and long queries often come from software.
Do Rank Trackers Inflate Search Console Impressions?
Yes. Many, if not most, of the impressions in Search Console come from rank trackers.
An impression means your page showed up on a results page, whether or not anyone clicked. Every rank tracker checking a keyword has to load that results page, so each check can count as an impression.
In September 2025, Google stopped supporting the setting rank trackers used to load 100 results at once. Afterward, Search Engine Land reported that 77% of sites lost keyword visibility in Search Console. The same report noted that rank trackers and scrapers may have been behind many of the impressions that disappeared.
Impressions still point you to terms where your site already shows up and could earn clicks by ranking a little higher. Just remember that a chunk of every impression count comes from software.
Why Doesn’t the Search Console Show Every Search Query?
Search Console only shows the query someone typed when that query is common. Google calls the rest anonymized queries and defines them as searches that aren’t made by more than a few dozen users over two to three months.
Search Console still counts every click and impression from those hidden queries and shows the page each one went to. The words behind uncommon searches stay hidden. An Ahrefs study of Search Console data found that anonymized queries made up about 47% of website traffic in April 2025.
Are Long Queries in Search Console From AI Mode Users?
Most full-sentence queries in Search Console come from rank trackers. Some prominent SEOs have said these long queries are a great way to find what people type into Google’s AI Mode, and I think that’s a mistake.
A query longer than three words is very unlikely to be common enough for Search Console to report it. When a long query shows up anyway, the likeliest explanation is that someone is running it through a rank tracking tool every day. That’s why long queries in Search Console almost never get clicks.
Click data is the part you can rely on. Bots don’t click, so clicks reflect real people.
Does Google Search Console Show AI Mode and AI Overview Data?
Yes, at the page level. Google launched Generative AI performance reports in Search Console in June 2026 and finished rolling them out to all websites by August 31, 2026. The report shows the impressions your pages earned in AI Overviews and AI Mode.
The Generative AI report only shows which pages earned those impressions. It doesn’t show the queries or any click data, so you can see that a page is appearing in AI answers without knowing what people asked.
This missing query data matters more every month. More and more searches now produce an AI response. Some of that comes from Google adding AI to more of its results, and some comes from people searching in tools like ChatGPT, where Search Console can’t see anything.
How Do You Track Visibility in ChatGPT and AI Search?
There’s very little reliable data for AI search. The best thing you can do is pick a set of searches that represent what you want to be recommended for, then run those searches every day.
Run your searches in these three places:
- ChatGPT
- Google’s AI Mode
- Google AI Overviews
You could run them in other tools as well. By my estimate, those three make up more than 90% of all AI searches.
Daily runs matter because AI answers change from one run to the next. A single check is a snapshot, and 30 days of checks show you a trend.
We use Peec.ai to run these prompts for our clients. Peec.ai shows how often each client is recommended for the searches they care about most, along with the pages the AI looked at before answering. If you’re weighing your options, here’s my breakdown of AI search tracking tools.
What Prompts Should You Track for AI Search?
The prompts we track most often follow the pattern “I’m this kind of person with this kind of problem, looking for this kind of company.”
For a roofer, that might be “I own a commercial building in Phoenix with a leaking flat roof. Who should I hire to fix it?” Prompts like that mirror how real buyers ask AI for a recommendation.
Start with a few dozen prompts that match how your ideal customers describe their problem. When we audit a website, we run about 50 prompts through the major AI tools.
Which Metrics Matter for Local and Ecommerce SEO?
Local and ecommerce businesses each have an extra source of first-party data from Google. Google Business Profile and Merchant Center data tie more closely to leads and sales than any keyword position.
What Does Google Business Profile Show Local Businesses?
Google Business Profile shows you stats on how people interacted with your profile. The numbers worth watching include:
- Calls from your listing
- Clicks to your website
- Requests for directions
- Bookings, for businesses that take them through Google
A rise in calls and direction requests tells a local business far more about its SEO than a position in a rank tracker.
What Does Merchant Center Show Ecommerce Stores?
Ecommerce businesses can get additional data from Google Merchant Center. It reports how often your products appeared across Google and how often people clicked on them.
Match Merchant Center data against sales in your store to see which products bring in revenue from organic search.
What Else Should You Know About Measuring SEO Success?
How Often Should You Check Search Console?
Once a month is plenty for most businesses. We review performance quarterly for our clients because SEO needs time to work, and short windows lead to hasty decisions.
Should You Still Pay for a Rank Tracker?
Rank trackers are useful for keyword research and for checking on competitors. For judging your own campaign, Search Console clicks and daily AI prompt tracking give you a far more accurate picture.
Why Do I Have Impressions but No Clicks in Search Console?
Two common reasons are rank tracker bots loading the results page and pages that rank too low for people to click. Filter your report to queries with clicks to see what real searchers are finding.
Can You Track Leads From ChatGPT?
Only partially, because people who find you through ChatGPT often contact you without ever clicking through to your website. Track it the way you’d track a billboard, by watching your daily prompt results alongside growth in branded searches in Search Console.
Who Can Help You Track SEO and AI Search Results?
At TJ Digital, we set up Search Console reporting and daily AI prompt tracking for every client before we build their first quarterly plan. Every quarter, I review the data myself and record a video walkthrough of what moved and why. Reach out through our contact page to talk about your campaign.
