Claude Opus 5 vs Fable 5: Which Model Should You Use in 2026?

Claude Opus 5 and Fable 5 AI models compared for everyday work, complex planning, performance, and cost in 2026.

Claude Opus 5 beats Fable 5 on most benchmarks, and it costs half as much. For everyday work, Opus 5 is the model to use. Fable 5 is still worth the premium for complex planning and any task that requires real judgment.

At TJ Digital, we run roughly 90% of our daily work in Claude and test every major model as it ships. I’ve been using Opus 5 nonstop for the last three days. Here’s when to use each model and how to get the most out of both.

Is Claude Opus 5 Better Than Fable 5?

On most benchmarks, yes, and no one saw it coming. Opus 5 is a slightly smaller model than Fable 5, so there was no reason to think it would come out ahead. It did anyway.

Fable is still the smarter model, though. And yes, I know I just said Opus beats Fable on most of the benchmarks. Opus wins them because it never gives up.

Opus doubts itself every step of the way, which is why it double-checks and triple-checks all of its work. Fable is smart, but it knows it’s smart, so it almost never doubts itself. It plows forward with whatever clever solution it comes up with, and those solutions are typically quite clever.

In FrontierCode coding tests, Opus 5 on medium reasoning effort scored about 53%. Fable 5 on high effort scored about 55%. Opus used roughly half the compute to get there.

How Much Do Claude’s Models Cost?

Opus 5 costs $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens. Fable 5 costs $10 and $50. That makes Fable twice the price at both ends.

Here’s how the published API rates compare across the models covered in this article:

ModelInput (per 1M tokens)Output (per 1M tokens)
Claude Opus 5$5$25
Claude Fable 5$10$50
ChatGPT 5.6 Sol$5$30
Kimi K3$3$15

These figures come from Anthropic’s pricing page and each model maker’s own published rates. Most people should never pay these rates directly, and I’ll explain why in the subscription section below.

When Should You Use Fable 5?

Use Fable 5 on High effort for anything complex and important. If a task is simple or straightforward, just use Opus. It ends up being cheaper and it does a great job.

Fable earns its price when the work calls for:

  • Good taste and judgment, like design decisions or strategy
  • Reasoning through many different factors and priorities at once
  • High-stakes projects where each point of accuracy matters
  • Long, messy tasks that run across many steps

How Do You Use Both Models Together?

Give Fable the task with one extra instruction. Tell it that it’s in charge of design and review, and that all implementation should be handled by Opus sub-agents.

You want Fable to come up with the plan and give the final sign-off. Opus is actually better at the implementation. Fable will typically spin up three to six sub-agents that all run Opus.

You’ll also save a lot of usage this way. I’ve been working this way for the last three days, and only about 30% of my usage has gone to Fable.

Which Claude Plan Do You Need?

Opus 5 is included on the Claude Pro plan. Fable 5 is only available on the Max plan. Unless you’re an enterprise that’s forced to pay for API usage, I think Claude’s subscriptions are where it’s at right now.

How much of your Claude usage can go to Fable 5?

Currently on Claude subscriptions, you can only use up to 50% of your usage on Fable 5. The sub-agent workflow above keeps you well under that cap. The rest of your usage runs through Opus at a much lower cost.

Is a Claude subscription cheaper than paying for API usage?

Much cheaper. If you max out a Claude subscription, you’re paying about 4% of the equivalent API cost. That works out to about 8% of what Kimi K3 charges right now.

How Does Opus 5 Compare to ChatGPT 5.6 Sol?

Opus 5 beats ChatGPT 5.6 Sol on both price and performance across almost every benchmark. Before this release, ChatGPT could at least claim to be the cheaper version of Fable. That case is much harder to make now.

In my ChatGPT 5.5 breakdown, I said 5.5 was already about as capable as Claude’s Opus tier. When I compared Sol against Claude Fable 5, OpenAI was winning on cost and Anthropic was winning on capability. Opus 5 closes that cost gap in a single release.

I’ve been using Opus nonstop for the last three days, and it’s hard for me to see why anyone would choose ChatGPT 5.6 Sol right now.

Is Kimi K3 Cheaper Than Claude?

Kimi K3 is cheaper per token, but a Claude subscription changes the math. Kimi’s API rates come out to a bit more than half the cost of Opus, and that only matters if you’re paying for usage. On a subscription, Claude is still far more affordable.

Kimi K3 itself is impressive. It beats Claude on a few benchmarks, and it loses the vast majority to both Opus and Fable. In one head-to-head across 35 benchmarks, Fable 5 won 22 tasks to Kimi’s 12.

So here’s where I land. Use Opus 5 for everyday work, bring in Fable 5 for planning and review on the complex stuff, and let the sub-agent workflow keep your usage in check.
